Houston Ebony Opera Guild announces Black History Month focus
The theme for Houston Ebony Opera Guild’s celebration of Black History Month is “Spirituals, Art Songs, and Symphonies: Works by Black Women Composers in Classical Music.” Two related programs will be presented on the second and third weekends in February 2013. Details are printed below.
February 9 - CONCERT PREVIEW (including discussion and music)
Entitled “Spirituals, Art Songs, and Symphonies: Works by African American Women Composers in Classical Music,” the 18th Annual Robert A. Henry Lecture will feature a panel discussion and live music by vocal and instrumental performers. The panel of scholars and musicians will include Dr. John L. Cornelius, II, Dr. Dianne Mack, Dr. John Snyder, Dr. Fennoyee Thomas, and Dr. Jason Oby, moderator. The Robert A. Henry Lecture is FREE and open to the public. It will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, February 9 at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 3115 Blodgett at Ennis.
There is no charge for admission. The program will offer a preview of the Annual African American Music Gala, a concert of works by Black women composers that will be presented
on February 23 & 24. See details below
February 23 & 24 - CONCERT PERFORMANCES
Houston Ebony Opera Guild is pleased to announce its Annual African American Music Gala. Entitled ”Spirituals, Art Songs and Symphonies,” the two concert performances will feature works for chorus, soloists, and piano by Black female composers active from the early twentieth century through today. A. Jan Taylor will conduct.
Performances will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, February 23 and 4 p.m., Sunday, February 24 at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue at San Jacinto. FREE PARKING available!
